Cell Painting: A Powerful Image-Based Technique for Drug Discovery and
Screening Assays

CellPaintingImage

A powerful image-based profiling tool for the development of drug discovery assays and multiparameter screening campaigns

Cell painting can be used to extract approximately 1,500 measurements from each cell based on changes in size, shape, texture, and fluorescence intensity. These measurements can be used to detect subtle changes in phenotype and gain data-rich information on important cellular parameters.

Conventional high-throughput screening applications can evaluate only a few measurements and are limited to compound-induced cellular changes. Cell painting, on the other hand, can be implemented in a multitude of diverse, high-resolution applications including:

  • Organelle-based measurements including that of the nucleus, endoplasmic reticulum, mitochondria, and others
  • Single-cell measurements of cells most sensitive to compound exposure compared with control cells
  • Identification of initial hits and mechanistic insights unreachable through traditional high-throughput assays
